Things to Have Memorial Day Weekend - NYC

by Jasmine Ledesma

While Memorial Day was originally celebrated on the 30th of May, it is now celebrated on the last Monday of May, unofficially kicking off the start of summer while honoring those who have passed away serving the United States Armed Forces. As grim as the holiday’s significance is, we can, and should, celebrate joyously.

Here are some items that you can use to welcome summer this Memorial Day.

POOL TOYS: Nothing says elegance, or rather a disregard for elegance in favor of fun, like laying on an inflatable swan. Or if you’d rather match the float to the occasion, you can sunbathe on the squeaky back of a massive bald eagle, with a cold beer in hand! To get the full experience, you can find many interesting and affordable pool floats on Amazon, Etsy, and Target.com.

GRILL: There might not be anything more American than loading your grill with patties and hot dogs until the air smells delicious. And if you don’t have a grill, there’s still hope. Wayfair is having a huge Memorial Day sale on all appliances until June 1st. The selection varies from a $100 red-topped grill and stove combo to a $300 cooking station styled grill. Get yours while you can!

SUNGLASSES: You can’t swear the burgers aren’t burning without sunglasses. Not only will you prevent smoke from getting into your eyes, but you’ll look great while grilling. You can even match with your pool float with these dusty pink, fabulous, flamingo-shaped sunglasses from Amazon. The options are endless even if the day isn’t.

SPEAKER: You’re lapping from one side of the pool to the other, the water frilling around you. A firework goes off in the distance and cars rumble by. You might as well add to the noise with this black, Bluetooth pill-shaped speaker from Best Buy. Blast the National Anthem for the entire block.

SUNSCREEN: It isn’t a party until everybody is protected. While the sun feels good against your back, it can also leave nasty burns. For an easy solution, turn to this moisturizing, all day lotion or any other incredibly affordable, durable sunscreen Walmart can offer.

Stay Safe! Have Fun!
