It gained formal recognition with the establishment of the American Association of Marriage Counselors (AAMC) in 1942, which later became the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) in 1979.

Initially, marriage counseling emerged as a response to shifting societal views on marriage, relationships, and gender roles in the early 20th century. The rise of industrialization, urbanization, and women’s rights movements contributed to changing relationship dynamics, leading to a greater need for structured guidance in marital issues. While therapy was primarily targeted at white, middle- to upper-class heterosexual couples, it has since expanded to support diverse racial, economic, and sexual backgrounds, making relationship counseling more accessible to all.

Here at SSM, we always recommend speaking to one of our relationship therapists, which is included in your subscription package. All subscribers receive a welcome letter at the start of their journey with us, which includes their assigned therapist and contact information. You can reach them day or night for three free sessions. After three sessions, it's just $150 per session until it renews the following month. Many of us are eager to dive into relationships, but sometimes, it may be a good idea to take a break, enjoy singledom, and allow yourself to heal from any issues you may be facing first.

As part of your SSM subscription, you get to join us for Pilates twice a month in a city near you.
