With the pandemic in full swing, I found myself not moving as often as I had been. I went from walking and running all the time to staying inside and losing motivation to workout. Working out without a partner is also a problem for me since I have a condition where my tendons hyperextend to the point of tearing. In my younger years, I worked out with my mom who worked as a physical trainer for over three years so that she could monitor my movements.
I was really worried about working out alone with free weights or improperly using a piece of equipment. When I heard about ClubCal Calisthenics, I was excited because calisthenics is a form of exercise that notoriously uses little to no equipment. So, I signed up and braced myself for some awesome gravity-oriented exercises.
I was somewhat disappointed. ClubCal does offer some great at-home and at-office stretches to get you off your computer and moving your body. But if you’re like me and don’t have an at-home gym set up, it gets a little tricky if you want to do their one-off workouts. While a lot of their workouts involve gravity, they also involve rings and balance bars that are not generally found in at-home gyms.
They do a decent job of guiding instructional videos to help ensure your body is moving, even if it is only against gravity. Their “Calisthenics for Desk Workers” course is safe and easy, with well thought out alternatives if you don’t have space or a lot of time. I was pleasantly surprised when my muscles ached a little after a ten-minute movement video. I especially loved the shoulder work out since I’m at my computer all day.
I think what they can do better is focus their “in-gym” workouts on how best to alter them at home. They are offering these courses online now for people who can’t get to the gym, but some of their workouts are advanced and revolve around their usual in-gym programs. I can’t do a lot of the moves they teach because I don’t have the right alternative equipment.
I would say if you have an at-home gym; you could make this program work wonders! If not try something like FitOn where all the videos are 15 minutes long and no equipment is necessary.
