If you’re a fashionista then you’ve heard of Shein. When it comes to shopping online or in-store there are a few things you should keep in mind:

  • Statement pieces differ from everyday pieces

  • Planning

  • Making a list

  • Utilizing store perks

  • Using a personal shopper

STATEMENT PIECES DIFFER FROM EVERYDAY PIECES:

Time and time again when I’m scrolling online I’ll see a cute top that is to be worn on one occasion, it is not for everyday wear, and yet, people stack up on them and then when it’s time for a casual day out, they say they have nothing to wear. Well, of course, because your closet is filled with pieces that do not reflect your real life.

You want your clothes to allow you to be comfortable and to let you move with ease. Don’t let anyone talk you out of wearing flats, sweatpants, or kitten heels if that works for you. Trust your instincts when it comes to shopping because you know your body best. A large part of being chic is being comfortable, if you’re in pain or don’t feel like yourself, it is going to show.

Statement Piece: This Shein Icon Solid Super Crop Sweater is what I would consider to be a statement piece. It is not something you can casually wear every day and feel good about yourself. For the average woman, we go through stages of bloating, cramps, and carrying water weight for a good portion of the month. So, typically, you wouldn’t be able to wear this top on a casual outing. Instead…

Everyday Piece: Opt for this everyday piece….Dazy Half Button Ribbed Knit Tee. Here’s why..it’s a light fabric which makes it perfect for the Fall and Spring. In Winter, you can wear it under a sweater or coat and still feel good. Either way, this is a basic top that you can pair with just about anything. It’s not over the top and it’s a nice piece to complete your look even if you’re just going to the supermarket.

PLANNING:

Take stock of what you already have and what you need. Start by trying on all of those items in your closet—depending on the season—and throw out anything old or ripped. For nicer items you’re just not into anymore, I recommend donating to your nearest Women’s Shelter. We believe that donated clothing should be free to those in need, unlike the clothing that is sold at Goodwill or Thrift stores. People should not pay for things that were donated. So, if you want to do good for someone else, women's shelters are the way to go.

Also, think back to those rushed mornings when you’re trying to get dressed and out of the house. What is it that you’re reaching for but never seem to have? Perhaps it’s something basic or simple. If so, take stock of that and remember to add it to the list and incorporate that into your budget. You can never go wrong with basics.

Remember to keep your budget in mind when shopping. Sure, Shein has great deals but quality is just as important as pricing. Even if you’re spending $8 on a shirt, you want it to last through multiple wash loads so that you don’t have to keep replacing it over and again. Sometimes spending $40 on a quality piece of clothing outweighs that of something cheap and flimsy. Statement pieces should always cost a bit more than your basics.

STORE PERKS:

Taking into account what I previously mentioned, splurging a bit on a statement piece is good. But if you’re like me and like to ball on a budget, then make note that the best time to shop is holidays and special occasions that your favorite store is having. For instance, Zara has their semi-annual sale around the third week of June. This is a great time to stock up on some quality pieces for a bargain.

Also, it’s a good idea to use the coupons that come in the mail. I know, keeping those around can be annoying especially when they’re from a department story like Macy’s. It’s frustrating when you get a coupon but learn that you can only use it on their products versus the brands they also sell. In that case, visit the store’s website instead. Oftentimes they will be running a sale of their own.

PERSONAL SHOPPER:

Personal shopping is considered a luxury service but it is offered by most department stores. Whether you’re shopping online or need help finding a nice outfit, consider asking for some outside help. Be very clear about your likes and dislikes, your budget, and your personal needs.

A good personal shopper has gained extensive experience from dressing women of all shapes and sizes and can do a very good job at shopping online as well as in-store. Also, they are responsible for pulling pieces that you may or may not like and the perk to this is that you can try on clothes within the privacy of your own home. If that doesn’t work consider blocking out some time to go shopping alone. Even if it’s online, make sure you’re in a quiet, calm setting so that your decisions are not impulsive and you’re actually selecting pieces you need and truly like.

Overall, give yourself time. With a store like Shein there are a plethora of options. If you don’t plan it’s easy to get lost and end up spending an exorbitant amount of money on things you don’t necessarily need. If you need more tips let us know in the comments below.
